And yet, a system as leaky as this one has been draining rainwater from almost all North American roofs for decades: gutters.

As expected, boring holes into this system during installation can lead to leaks and water infiltration during heavy rains. All the conditions are then met for the edge of a roof to rot.

Thermal expansion and contraction that stretches out and shortens gutters aggravates this inherent problem by causing repetitive stress on this structure without any expansion joints.
Since the nails or screws securing a gutter in place cannot move once they are fastened, such pressure is absorbed by the back of the gutter. As a result, the gutter can lose its watertight seal due to the punctured holes at each anchor point elongating under pressure up to ½ an inch.
On longer stretches of gutter or when there are sudden changes in temperature, gutters can become permanently distorted or even tear completely.
