The Long Shadow: Richard McCann Discusses New Peter Sutcliffe Drama | Good Morning Britain

Last night, was the first episode of The Long Shadow - a seven-part ITV drama depicting the desperate five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe. The drama focuses on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation. The search for Sutcliffe was one of the largest and most expensive manhunts in British history. West Yorkshire Police faced heavy and sustained criticism for their failure to catch him despite having interviewed him nine times in the course of their five-year investigation.

Richard McCann was just 5 when his mum Wilma became Sutcliffe’s first victim. He has long campaigned for his mother’s killer to always be named in full across authorities, press and media reports instead of a pseudonym or moniker. He says labelling serial killers glamorises their crimes and encourages copycats. Earlier this month, ITV confirmed the working title: “The Yorkshire Ripper” would switch to “The Long Shadow” after consultation with Richard and other families.
