Day 3: Of the gluten free Casein Free Diet 21 day Challenge
Today, we focus on *why removing gluten* is beneficial for most children with autism. While not all children are intolerant to gluten and casein, many experience *gut irritation, brain inflammation, and delayed immune responses* when consuming these proteins. This is not about "curing" autism but rather reducing factors that negatively impact gut and brain health.
*Key Points:*
*What is Gluten & Where Is It Found?*
Gluten is a group of proteins found in **wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and triticale**.
Oats are often contaminated unless specifically labeled "gluten-free."
Gluten is also hidden in processed foods like **French fries, sausages, soy sauce, salad dressings, and cheese-flavored snacks**.
*Why Gluten & Casein Can Be Problematic*
Most children with autism have an *IgG (delayed) food sensitivity* to gluten and casein.
These proteins **irritate the gut, trigger inflammation, and contribute to leaky gut**, leading to systemic issues.
Gluten and casein act like **opioids in the brain**, causing **foggy thinking, hyperactivity, speech delays, mood swings, and food addictions**.
Children with high pain tolerance, gut issues, anxiety, or hyperactivity may be reacting to gluten/casein.
*Expected Reactions When Removing Gluten*
*Withdrawal symptoms* may include **tantrums, aggression, cravings, headaches, and digestive changes**.
This is due to the *opioid-like effects* of gluten and casein.
*Action Plan for Today:*
1. *Start removing gluten from your child’s diet.*
2. *Hydrate your child purposefully* to support detox.
3. *Ensure daily bowel movements* (increase fiber, hydration, movement, or use supplements like magnesium citrate).
4. *Check food labels carefully* and eliminate gluten-containing items.
5. *Track your child’s progress* on your therapy tracker.
This is an important step in improving gut and brain function.
