I get lots of enquiries about audio production for podcasts, which is awesome, as I've been a podcast fan for over 10 years.
I now have several podcast clients, and have so far produced around 100 episodes of various podcasts, so I follow lots of podcasts.
They used to just be replays of radio shows, now they can be done in a bedroom, which while it opens up opportunities for a wide variety of perspectives, does present occasional quality issues, in particular loudness, which I'll talk about here.
Getting loudness right is important - with podcasts, you're inside people's ear canals!
If you make it too loud - ouch! If you make it too soft, listeners will have to turn the volume right up, and once the next podcast comes on, that will blast out and it's ouch again!
Podcasting an unregulated medium, there are no formal protocols as of 2017.
On audio forums, people have gravitated towards a standard which is a loudness standard, not a volume standard.
Volume is how much audio is present at any moment in time. You can adjust a sound file's volume to a certain peak, but that's still just momentary, and doesn't measure how loud something feels.
Loudness is how loud the audio feels over a period of time, not just in a moment.
Loudness is measured in LUFS or LKFS, and for podcasts lots of people go for around -16 to -18 LUFS/LKFS.
Also look out for consistency of loudness, known as LRA (loudness range). Shoot from around 3 to 6 LRA.
In the video I run loudness analysis on sevearl popular podcasts, including Marc Maron's WTF, The Tim Ferriss Show, The Nerdist, Hamish & Andy, and The Osher Günsberg Podcast.
The software I use is free and available here: https://www.orban.com/meter/
TC Electronic have explained loudness really well here:
