Hi Everyone my name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.

Today I am talking about tapeworms in the cat. Cat tapeworms are very common. I see tapeworms about once a week at our veterinary clinic. Tapeworms are spread between cats by the flea. Fleas are the required intermediate host.

When a flea eats a tapeworm egg and then the cat eats the flea, the tapeworm is spread to the cat. The tapeworm will then grow into an adult tapeworm. Adult tapeworms can be very long. The tapeworm release proglottids or eggs when the cat poops. The eggs or tapeworms look like rice; however the "rice" will move...gross! Most of the tapeworm eggs will be found around the cat's butt and on the poop in the litterbox.

A veterinary can use the tapeworm proglottids or eggs to diagnosis to the cat tapeworm infection. A veterinarian will treat the tapeworm infection with a dewormer. The deworming can be completed with an injection or oral tablet. The pet owner will also need to treat any possible fleas in the house, because the cat got the tapeworms from the fleas.
