It gives me great pleasure to welcome in 2025 with a beautiful interpretation of quiet details from the UK-based composer, Wil Bolton.
A prolific producer and live artist, Wil has released work on labels such as Home Normal, LAAPS, PITP, Dauw, Dronarivm, Eilane Rec, Fluid Audio, Hidden Vibes, Krysalisound, Audiobulb, Hibernate, Sound In Silence and more; with performances at the likes of Cafe Oto, Tate Liverpool, Iklectik and The Biscuit Factory.
Add this to a long list of artist residencies at institutions such as EMS (Elektronmusikstudion, Stockholm), and we have a musician of huge talent, vision and skill.
South of the Lake, inspired by a journey around South Korea, finds Wil in wonderfully reflective and serene mood, a perfect way to begin another journey around the Sun.
Centred around field recordings collected when travelling, there’s a feeling of gentle forward-motion throughout the album, as if we were there with him while moving through the landscapes.
The music has an incredibly refined sense of harmonic development and is also highly evocative, the soundscapes have a deeply hypnagogic quality, drawing you ever further into these beautifully formed worlds.
Echoes of the Naesosa buddhist temple, Mugaksa temple in Gwangju, Daehan Tea Garden and Suncheon Bay Nature Reserve, mix with deftly crafted music - made using many instruments collected there too.
Korean singing bowl, bells and wind chimes, tingsha, glockenspiel, chime bars, rosaries, stones and pine cones from Korea - live in synergy with Fender Bass VI, OP-1, Buchla Easel Command, Arturia Microfreak, Mellotron, Cocoquantus and various effects pedals - all at once creating soundscapes that flow in perfect harmony.
As Wil says:
inspired by a spring road trip around honam, the southwestern region of korea.
moments of stillness and quiet in temples, nature reserves and a tea garden.
for soo.
Huge thanks to Wil, a gorgeous addition to the series.
The artwork was made as always influenced by the music and idea behind the album - originating from a photo from Wil which was then captured with analogue photography and processed here at quiet details studios.
As usual, the album is presented on the physical edition, a custom six-panel digipack with a separate fine art print too.
