aluminum conductor steel rainforced (ACSR) is used for transmission lines. Aluminum has not very good conductivity and tensile strength like copper material but by aluminum rainforcedment, it's tensile strength can be increased and as it's cost is very low than copper material as well as it has low specific gravity, so this ACSR conductor is used in transmission lines.


Actually conductivity of aluminium is less than copper.

Aluminum is used for transmission lines when copper is better material for transmission lines as far as electrical conductivity , mechanical strength (tensile) and thermal coefficient of expansion is considered. Lower conductivity of aluminum means more power loss as compared to copper for same conductor size. Also, lower tensile strength and higher thermal coefficient of expansion of aluminum cause higher sag on transmission line which call for more conductor and higher height of supporting structure for sufficient ground clearance.
However Aluminum is cheaper and lighter than copper. For the same power loss aluminum conductors gives theoretically 50% mass saving as copper is 1.7 times more conductive but has 3.3 times more mass than aluminum. This cost and mass saving is significant for the transmission lines which generally run for thousands of km.
(Copper has high electrical conductivity of 5.96×10^7 S/m as compared to 3.50×10^7 S/m of Aluminum.Aluminum has mass density of 2.70 g/cm^3 as compared to 8.89 g/cm^3 of copper)
