This song, written in the 50s by Armando Zeferino Soares and popularized first by the angolan singer Bonga in the 70s and later Cesaria Evora, the barefoot Diva, in the early 90s speaks about the separation of two friends.

One stayed in Cape Verde (São Nicolau in the song, one of Cape Verde's Islands) and the other one moved to São Tomé & Principe.

São Tomé, just like Cape Verde, is a former portuguese colony. It's a group of islands located in front of Gabon. until the early 70s, many Cape Verdeans exiled to São Tomé to run away from the political and economical oppression of their country. Exodus was sometimes voluntary, some others forced. This song echoes slavery days and is a real anthem for all those driven to exile, far away from their home, far away from their families and friends.

La chanson, écrite par Armando Zeferino Soares dans les années 50 et popularisée par l'Angolais Bonga dans les années 70, puis par Cesaria Evora ,"la diva aux pieds nus", dans les années 90, parle d’une séparation entre deux amis.

L’un est resté au Cap-Vert (São Nicolau, dans la chanson, est l’une des îles du Cap-Vert) et l’autre est parti pour São Tomé e Principe.

São Tomé est, comme le Cap-Vert, une ancienne colonie portugaise. C’est un archipel situé en face du Gabon. Jusqu’au début des années 70, de nombreux Cap-Verdiens se sont exilés à São Tomé pour échapper aux difficultés politiques et économiques de leur pays. L’exil était parfois volontaire, parfois forcé. Cette chanson fait donc écho au temps de l'esclavage et est un véritable hymne pour tous ceux poussés à l'exil, loin de chez eux, loin des leurs.
