IBM has been quietly laying off thousands of employees this week, primarily in its Cloud division, according to sources cited by The Register. These layoffs have been conducted under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), preventing employees from discussing the specifics. Reports from layoff forums suggest the scale is significant.

An IBM spokesperson referred to an earlier statement indicating a small percentage of the global workforce would be affected. IBM’s Q1 2024 earnings report disclosed a $400 million expense for layoffs, following a similar charge of $300 million in 2023 when 3,900 jobs were cut. IBM had approximately 288,000 employees at the end of 2023, suggesting the current layoffs could range between 2,880 and 8,640 positions.

This move follows broader trends among tech giants like Samsung and Intel, who have also announced significant layoffs due to economic challenges such as recession fears, inflation, and rising interest rates. According to Layoffs.FYI, over 438 tech companies have cut a total of 137,500 jobs so far this year.
