A new bill at the Ohio Statehouse aims to bring public schools across the state into a unified effort to prevent and stop the human trafficking of children.

State Rep. Josh Williams (R- Sylvania Twp.) just introduced House Bill 431 to require human trafficking screening in public schools.

"Our state has consistently ranked in the top five to 10% in human trafficking overall," Williams told 10TV in an interview. "My home city of Toledo consistently ranks in the top five as it relates to juvenile sex trafficking. I think it's important that we provide safety and security to our families knowing that our children are not at risk of being human trafficked here in the state of Ohio."

Under the bill, Ohio school districts would use the Focus Youth Screening Tool, developed over three years by the University of Toledo's Human Trafficking and Social Justice Institute in partnership with the Ohio Attorney General's Office.
