Japanese wrestlers becoming politicians – it’s a bit of a tradition at this point.

Antonia Inoki, the founder of new japan pro wrestling, was elected to Japans National Diet in 1989. He actually under his own basically made up political party called the “Sports and Peace Party” and continued wrestling while he served in the House of Councillors.

After some scandals he left politics in 1994 but came back and was elected again from 2013 onward.

Believe it or not, hardcore deathmatch wreslter Atsushi Onita even became an elected polictian in 2001. His political career ended in a sex scandal.

Then there’s Hiroshi Hase, a really popular jr heavyweight in the 90s who also got elected to the National Diet in 1995 as an independent. He even became a federal minister under prime minister SHinzo Abe’s government. And this year he was elected governor of his prefecture.

And of course, The Great Sasuke, perhaps the world’s first masked politician.
