Content/Experience:
My good friend Michael Harth, Co-Founder and Chief Culture Officer of LAZ Parking (see video:    • Michael Harth, Owner, Surfhouse & Co-...  ), is driving me to Scripps Urgent Care to treat my latest diagnosis--a fungal infection in my lungs (Pneumocystis). Yesterday, while I was being treated for Cavitary Pneumonia, I received a Bronchoalveolar Lavage, a saltwater wash of the lungs where the wash is sent for analysis. The analysis revealed the Pneumocystis.

I am disappointed to be admitted for IV treatment. Tomorrow is Father’s Day, and I was so looking forward to making every moment count with my boys. Beyond that, this could upend our trip to Santa Barbara next week, my first chance to see where Zach is going to school.

On the other hand, this is a serious diagnosis. I remember many AIDS patients dying of Pneumocystis when I was training at San Francisco General. It is something I will have to rise to face.

I find I can hold both emotions at the same time: my disappointment and my will to rise. I also recognize the serendipity hidden in my disappointment: my earlier blood clot kept me from traveling to Cabo, Mexico, and if I had received my diagnosis while traveling, it would have been much harder to treat.

With plans up in the air, I look forward to nearer-term joys…Sue is coming soon with her delicious soup and sugar-free chocolate mousse, and we are going to binge watch our favorite show. By the grace of God, I will rise!

Reflection:
-When have you struggled with disappointing circumstances?
-Think of a disappointment that resulted in serendipity (like my blood clot preventing me from traveling).
-How might that experience be a resource for current or future disappointments?

Action:
-What reminder can you create for yourself to help you shift from disappointment to optimism more quickly?
