Ex.6: Extraction of Acetone-Water with 3-Methylhexane as the
Solvent
Water has a high latent heat (heat of vaporization) compared to many
other components. For the separation of a(100 kg/hr) water-acetone
mixture (50 wt-% each), it may be more energy efficient to use
extraction instead of direct distillation. In this example, we utilize (150
kg/hr ) 3-methyl hexane at the same condition of the feed (25 c and 1
bar ) as a solvent to remove water via liquid-liquid extraction( 8 stages
) the pressure and temperature of the top column is 1 bar and 25c
respectively, the pressure of the bottom is 1 bar, followed by
distillation (50 stages ) the pressure in the top and bottom 1 bar (1.5
Reflux Ratio) to remove the solvent from acetone. As shown in the
