Painting My Childhood. Painting the Golden Mile from my Imagination.

Описание к видео Painting My Childhood. Painting the Golden Mile from my Imagination.

I often look back at the place where I grew up and draw inspiration from it. My most succcessful painting was based on memories of my mother's stories of leaving Ireland to train as a nurse in bomb-damaged East London of the early 1950s. That painting ended up in the British National Collection and I'm very proud of it. I must be getting old!

The family home I grew up in was on the Great West Road in West London. All the way along on this stretch, were factories built in the beautiful and stately Art Deco style - Coty, Mercedes Benz, Gilette, Firestone, Beldam. All well spaced out and standing in their own grounds along the sweep of the broad Great West Road; an almost Californian scene. The Mercedes building was designed to look like the superstructure of an ocean liner, complete with guard rails for passengers!

Then the Brutalist road-planners decided that they wanted to drive huge ugly motorways right into the heart of the cities; one of them, the M4, was erected right alongside our house, directly on top of the GWR. It's still there, although the huge concrete plinths on which the M4 runs are beginning to crumble and remedial work is underway.
