YASHK Inauguration Ceremony cum Science & Technology Forum

The Event:
The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences (YASHK), a chapter of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences (ASHK) was inaugurated on 9 June 2019 at an ceremony officiated by Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Thirty-one members of YASHK are all young elites coming from various fields of science and technology including mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. They are dedicated to promoting scientific research, popularisation of science education, nurturing talents in science in Hong Kong. They will also work with ASHK members to help facilitate international exchanges and collaboration, and consolidating efforts to reinforce Hong Kong’s status in the world of science.

Furthermore, they aim at campaigning for scientific ethics, upholding the spirit of science, serving as a role model for young people on a scientific quest, and driving scientific and technological development as well as technology transfer.

A series of talks on science and technology including the subjects of genome editing and biomedical engineering were held after the inauguration ceremony. Speakers included Prof. Dennis Yuk-Ming Lo, Board Director and Founding Member of ASHK; Prof. Tai-Kai Ng, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education; Dr. Vic Kam-Tuen Law, President of YASHK; Dr. Stephanie Kwai-Yee Ma, Prof. Raymond Kai-Yu Tong and Dr. Amos Pui-Kuen Tai, Members of YASHK.

The Speaker:
Graduated from The University of Hong Kong (Undergraduate) and Northwestern University (PhD), Prof. Ng is a theoretical condensed matter physicist interested at application of Quantum Field Theory to condensed matter systems. Topics of research interests include strong correlated electrons and spin-liquid states, non-equilibrium mesoscopic transports, topological order and unconventional superconductors. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (2000) and a Croucher Senior Research Fellow (2002).

Prof. Ng is also deeply involved in promoting science education and education for the gifted learners. He is a member of CDC Committee on Science Education since 2002 and a member of CDC Committee on Gifted Education since 2012. At present he is a Co-Editor of Europhysics Letters and a Council Member of The Education University of Hong Kong.
