In this short video, Lesson 4 of our course on the Philosophy of Libertarianism, Chris Freiman, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the College of William and Mary, walks us through some examples from the Jim Crow period of American history of people who, today, might be called social justice warriors:

-Abolitionist John Brown
-Lysander Spooner, the first full-fledged modern Libertarian
-And writer and escaped slave Frederick Douglass

These individuals understood that Jim Crow laws didn't respect people's right to engage and exchange with each other. But Professor Freiman also makes a powerful point: that "Jim Crow laws … were LAWS. They were products of the state."
