Kashgar (喀什), officially known as Kashi, is a county-level city in the Tarim Basin region of southern Xinjiang (新疆), China. It stands as one of China's westernmost cities, near the borders with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Kashgar has been a crucial oasis on the Silk Road for over 2,000 years, connecting China with the Middle East and Europe. It is among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with a rich history of being under the rule of Chinese, Turkic, Mongol, and Tibetan empires.

The city's strategic location has made it a melting pot of cultures and a site for numerous historical battles. Kashgar's administration as a county-level city makes it the administrative center of Kashgar Prefecture, which spans an area of 162,000 km² and had a population of around 4 million as of 2010. In 2010, Kashgar was designated a Special Economic Zone, the only city in western China to hold this status. It also marks the terminus of the Karakoram Highway, which is a significant part of the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Kashgar's population in 2020 was approximately 782,662, with Uyghurs making up 85.8% and Han Chinese 13.5% of the demographic. The city's economy has seen growth, with its GDP reaching CN¥22.8 billion (about US$3.3 billion) in 2019.

The name Kashgar itself has a debated origin, with historical references dating back to the Han dynasty when it was known as Shule (疏勒) and later, during the Song dynasty, as 喀什噶尔 (Kàshígé'ěr). The city has been a significant point of interest throughout history, from its early mentions in Chinese records to its role in the Kushan Empire and its strategic importance on the Silk Road.
