Reverend Michael Braxton and his wife Evelyn had six children in a 10-year period, five of them daughters: Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar. When the youngest Tamar was five, she called out from the bathroom for someone to get her toilet paper. All the sisters began harmonizing and singing an extemporaneous "toilet paper song" and they began to gel as a vocal group. They released an album as The Braxtons, which did not find success despite being produced by record execs L.A. Reid and Babyface Edmonds. Toni left the group in 1991 and her sisters became her backup dancers. Her self-titled debut, also produced by Reid and Babyface, peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and won her three Grammys. Toni's follow-up, 1996's Secrets, also sold 8 million copies and gave her first #1 single "Un-Break My Heart". Nevertheless, due to a bad contract with Arista and LaFace Records, Toni didn't see any money from the success and she filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. In 1998, Toni debuted on Broadway as Belle in Beauty and the Beast - the one and only time a black woman starred in a Disney musical on Broadway. The next year, she finally won her suit against the record label and recovered her due residuals. On a new $20 million contract, Toni's 2000 album The Heat sold 4 million copies worldwide and earned Toni another Grammy for uptempo lead single "He Wasn't Man Enough". It would be her last solo top 10 appearance.
