In this video, we take you inside the Huestis House (built in 1850) at Kings Landing Historical Settlement for a taste of true heritage cooking. On the open hearth, we prepared a hearty meal of roast chicken, potatoes, carrots, buttermilk (soda) biscuits, and rich gingerbread—all with traditional methods that bring the 19th century to life.

This video was filmed entirely by natural light (no artificial lighting was used), so you’ll notice the warm flicker and natural shifts in brightness—just as it would have been experienced in the mid-1800s.

The video was created to showcase the Open Hearth Cooking Workshops at Kings Landing, where visitors can roll up their sleeves, cook over the fire, and immerse themselves in a one-of-a-kind historical experience. I tried to capture not only the recipes, but the spirit of what it feels like to step back in time and share a meal from the past.
