UNMIL'S Response to Ebola: How Rule of Law Components are making a difference.

Ebola is deadly, but preventable and that's why UNMIL is working with the government of Liberia to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in the nation’s prisons, police service and other security agencies.

In this video, Sylver Ntukamazina, the Head of the Legal and Policy Reform section of UNMIL, speaks about how Ebola and the state of emergency in Liberia has driven consultations with National Liberian counterparts including the Ministry of Justice, the Judiciary, and the Liberian National Bar Association, to ensure that the rights of persons engaged with the criminal justice system are not abused. Sylver cites the example of the “imperative to release a number of pre-trial detainees” who don’t pose a threat to society in order to reduce risks of the spread of Ebola in the criminal justice system.
