Elaine Skalabrin, M.D., a vascular neurologist at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, shares with the Coquille community the reason why it’s important to recognize a stroke as a medical emergency and how to reduce your risk of stroke.

A stroke occurs when there’s a disruption of blood flow to an area of the brain. Stroke can happen at any age, but the risk of stroke increases with age. Strokes are preventable when certain risk factors are reduced or eliminated, such as high blood, high cholesterol, smoking, illicit drug use and obesity.

Stroke can be disabling, so it’s extremely important to know the signs of stroke and to call 911 immediately when a stroke occurs. “The faster you get to the hospital, the faster we can try to reverse the effects of the stroke and limit the disability,” says Dr. Skalabrin.
