ABOUT THIS FILM

Yorkshire's wonderful wildlife

I was brought up here on the Yorkshire Wolds and the beauty of this gentle, rolling landscape and its wildlife has influenced me from a very young age. My father was a farm manager and as a child I would roam the fields searching out birds nests and badger setts.

School days

As a boy, I struggled at school. I am dyslexic and found reading and writing impossible. But I found I could draw and took refuge in my art work. I wanted my drawings and paintings to be as realistic as possible, and, one day, when I reached for a feather on my desk and noticed I was trying to pick up my own painting of feather, I decided I was good enough.

Wildlife first, then art

But my first love was wildlife. Every art project I was given, I made about wildlife. I remember once being set a project on food. I went out and caught a trout, painted it, and then cooked it!

Watching wildlife for my art

Before I ever pick up a paintbrush, I spend days outdoors watching wildlife. I follow the seasons, and am out in spring looking for hares boxing or in summer watching barn owls gliding over the countryside. Every evening I sit up in a bespoke tree-hide I built high above a badger sett photographing the individual badgers as they emerge from their underground setts.

Composition

When I get home I spread out my photographs on the table in my art studio and pick out perfect animal poses for my compositions.

Paint

People always ask me how long it takes me to paint, and although this stage of the process takes patience as I work to make the fur or feathers of my subjects lifelike, it is actually the first stage of watching and photographing the animal which takes the longest.

Art gallery

I have exhibited my work in London and Paris, but I've always wanted to build my own gallery and in 2001 my dream became a reality when I won a rural enterprise grant to convert a former dairy in Thixendale into a gallery.

Art business

This was just as well because I was getting up to 1,500 visitors to my exhibitions and they were having to trek through my house to see the paintings! I now get up to 12,000 visitors to my gallery a year.

World travel

I travel the world to watch wildlife in its natural habitat and hope to be able to continue to do so. On display in my gallery alongside the paintings of owls, kestrels, badgers and hares spotted on the Yorkshire Wolds, are portraits of leopards seen in Kenya, tigers watched in India, and albatross from The Galapagos Islands.
