Human rights activist Malala Yousafzai announced she married her “partner for life” in a small ceremony in Birmingham, England, nearly a decade after she survived an assasination attempt by the Taliban over campaigning for girls’ education in Pakistan. Yousafzai appears to have reversed course on her opinion of marriage. In an interview with British Vogue in June, she expressed skepticism about the concept. “I still don’t understand why people have to get married,” she told the magazine. “If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”Yousafzai was only 15 years old when she was attacked by a Taliban gunman on her way home from school in Pakistan’s Swat Valley in 2012. She was a target for the conservative Islamic group, which was growing in influence in the area, over her girls’ education campaigning. Yousafzai was shot in the left side of her face by a bullet that traveled through her neck and into her shoulder. She then moved with her family to the United Kingdom to receive treatment. The news of the assasination attempt spurred international outrage. Yousafzai has continued to campaign for human rights, and is the cofounder of the Malala Fund, which aims to help girls all over the world receive 12 years of quality education. In 2014, Yousafzai became the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate at age 17, and she graduated from Oxford University in 2020. In August, after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan when U. S. forces left, Yousafzai penned an op-ed for the New York Times about her experience with  the group. “Afghan girls and young women are once again where I have been — in despair over the thought that they might never be allowed to see a classroom or hold a book again,” Yousafzai wrote.
