Chicago residents were treated to a rare celestial show as the Northern Lights lit up the sky on November 11. The dazzling pink and green auroras were visible across the Chicago area, including Cary, Downers Grove, and Wilmette — a rare event caused by a powerful X5.1-class solar flare and Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the geomagnetic storm reached severe levels, making the aurora visible much farther south than usual. The same solar event also caused radio blackouts in Europe and Africa. Experts say the Northern Lights could appear again over Chicago as the storm continues.
