Présentation : La distinction de l’espace privé et de l’espace public est l’une des grandes conquêtes des démocraties modernes. En effet, cette distinction soustrait la liberté et l’intimité individuelles à la surveillance et à l’arbitraire du pouvoir politique et, réciproquement, permet l’exercice de ce pouvoir indépendamment de toute prétention privée de faire la loi dans l’espace public.
Or cette distinction se trouve aujourd’hui brouillée, à la fois par de nouvelles techniques invasives du privé par le public et de nouvelles tentatives du privé d’empiéter sur le public, notamment pour ce qui est des croyances religieuses qui prétendent à nouveau prendre part ès qualités aux discussions et décisions publiques.
Que penser et que faire alors de la conception et de la pratique républicaines de la laïcité (française essentiellement), qui tâche de sauvegarder l’indépendance respective de l’espace privé et de l’espace public, en notre moment historique singulier marqué par des confusions et des violences que l’on avait naïvement pu croire dépassées ?

Presentation: The distinction between private and public space is one of the great achievements of modern democracies. Indeed, this distinction removes individual freedom and intimacy from the surveillance and arbitrariness of political power and, conversely, allows the exercise of that power independently of any private claim to make law in the public space.
However, this distinction is now blurred, both by new invasive techniques of the private sector by the public and new attempts by the private sector to encroach on the public, particularly with regard to religious beliefs that claim to be once again participating in public discussions and decisions in their capacity as such.
What then to think and do with the republican conception and practice of secularism (essentially French), which tries to safeguard the respective independence of private and public spaces, in our singular historical moment marked by confusion and violence that we naively thought had been overtaken by?
