Video onboard 2021 Prevost X3-45 Commuter Coach 1432 operating on the newly extended QM15 route between Beach Channel Drive & Beach 54th Street in Arverne, to East 57th Street & 3rd Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Service on the QM15 to/from Arverne started earlier this month as part of the winter pick, due to the impending (A) train shutdown to/from the Rockaways. The shutdown is done in part to make the infrastructure more resilient to future storms, but to also make critical fixes after Hurricane Sandy ravished the NYC area in October 2012.

The QM15 is making all QM17 stops south of Lindenwood, through Broad Channel and Rockaway Beach enroute to and from Arverne. This for now is expected to be a temporary service change that will last until the shutdown is complete in the spring. However given that many trips extended to/from Arverne already are making that trip as a deadhead to or from the nearby Far Rockaway Depot, it is possible to keep the existing schedules in place permanently. Especially if ridership builds up notably south of Lindenwood during this time.

It was very surprising to see this particular trip to Midtown as full as it was. The 4:00 PM trip from Lindenwood (now the 3:30 PM starting from Arverne) is one of the last few buses into Manhattan, and ridership on that trip in the past would never have been more than about 6-8 people. However the QM15 route has been making steady gains since before the pandemic. While the ridership went down like all routes as a result of the pandemic, QM15 ridership rebounded and continued increasing in subsequent years. This was also the first Saturday where congestion pricing in NYC was in effect. It will be interesting to see how ridership is like on this route as time goes on, but it only appears to grow as time goes on.
