Chalk Talk is a short conversation with a teacher about their teaching methods. In this video, the teacher shares how they prepare for classes, what they do inside the classroom, and how they support students beyond class hours. The discussion focuses on real classroom experiences, teaching style, and tips for effective learning.
Professor Neeraj Misra earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1991, after completing his M.Sc. there and a B.Sc. from Kanpur University. He served as a lecturer at Panjab University Chandigarh and as a Research Fellow at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven before joining IIT Kanpur in 1996, where he became Professor (HAG) in 2012.
His teaching covers probability, statistical inference, stochastic processes, multivariate analysis, non-parametric inference, and decision theory. A committed mentor, he has supervised 12 Ph.D. students, many of whom now hold positions at IITs, IIMs, and Central Universities.
His research spans theoretical and applied statistics, including entropy estimation, stochastic orders and aging, inference in restricted parameter spaces, and ranking and selection. He has published extensively in leading international journals, linking statistical theory with applications.
Professor Misra has held major academic leadership roles, including Dean of Academic Affairs (2015–2018), Head of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics (2008–2011), and Chairman of JEE (Advanced) 2014 at IIT Kanpur. His honors include the Jacob Wolfowitz Award (2003), the Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) from the Indian Association for Reliability and Statistics, the Gopal Das Bhandari Distinguished Teacher Award (2025), the 1989 Batch Faculty Award (2025), and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Panjab University (2025).
