The Supreme Court has paused its own earlier order that tried to shrink the Aravalli hills into a lazy 100 metre definition which would have conveniently kicked huge ecologically critical areas out of protection and the court clearly sensed the danger and stopped it announcing a so called high powered expert committee to decide what Aravalli really is but let us not act naive the real question is how independent this committee will be because in this country committees are often just clean suits for dirty decisions and this smells like the classic playbook stall public outrage buy time drown people in technical jargon and then quietly hand over Aravalli to miners builders and corporate vultures while everyone is busy celebrating a temporary pause. I guess we should wait to find out what will happen on 21st January 2025
