Friends Arena's quest for perfect pitch quality | FULL INTERVIEW

In the search for perfect pitch quality as well as achieving its sustainability goals Friends Arena (Stockholm), home of the Swedish national team and football club AIK, turned to LED grow lighting technology.

With an enclosed stadium structure, a retractable roof and Swedish weather conditions, the presence of natural sunlight is not a given fact. On top of that, Friends Arena face another challenge: a very busy schedule. If it’s not AIK or the Swedish National team (men or women) practicing or playing, a concert performed by Lady Gaga for instance takes place in between games.

A way to tackle at least one of these challenges is the use of LED grow lights. With 10 LED440’s present, the Arena is able to treat half of the pitch at once. Groundsman of the Friends Arena, Simeon Liljenberg, underlines the positive results:

“We see a future if we can use the right LED spectrum for grass. We started testing LED grow lights from eight different brands, which we then narrowed down. At the moment we have SGL rigs all over the pitch and the results have been fantastic so far.”
