Rescuers in Antarctica have reportedly transferred all 52 people from the stranded research vessel Akademik Shokalskiy to safety. The Australian rescue team said all passengers were now aboard the ship Aurora Australis. They were flown there in groups by a helicopter from a Chinese ice-breaker. The ship had been stuck since Christmas Eve when it became trapped by thick sheets of ice about 1,500 nautical miles south of the Australian state of Tasmania. The vessel is being used by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition to follow the route explorer Douglas Mawson travelled a century ago. Report by Charlotte Cross.
