Okay, I don't really know what these things are called (your help would be appreciated!) but I see 'em all over my home state of Colorado and the American southwest. Obviously it's used to "sort" or separate cattle and other livestock for market purposes. I don't eat meat so am especially interested in the ways we treat other creatures and suspect the animals are very much afraid when in this or related structures. Anyway, this particular coral is right along Moffat County Road 10 near Dinasour National Monument in northwest Colorado - I encountered dozens of these throughout Moffat County alone, not to mention the few thousand I've seen around the west...

In October, 2011 "keegankamp" provided this info:
"This is a gathering facility built with lodgepoles for a Ranching Operation to gather, sort, load and treat cattle when needed.This is very low stress for the cattle as they are gathered up by horseback or 4wheeler and brought in as a herd.This is a very high tech facility although old.This type is preferred over portable panels as the wood will not bang around and make noise.Without this, Cattle would either go without treatment and die, or get roped and dragged. This is the most humane way ."

In late December, 2010, nuYashaLuva2592 sent me this description/explanation:
It looks like an old round up pen for cattle that have been on BLM land but it doesn't look like it's been used for a while. The pens are used to help round up cattle that have been roaming BLM land and are separated to make sure that all cows and calves are accounted for. They can hold hundreds of cattle at a time and normally the cattle come from feedlots or large cattle ranches. It might not be used anymore because portable panel corrals are used more now than these old wooden ones.
