✨️Tuesdays for Teachers ✨️
Let's understand what's behind attention issues! 📝🧠

❓Do you have students who constantly struggle to pay attention in class and follow the lesson? They may seem to tune out when you give instructions, and it takes them unusually long to finish classwork.

🎯 A student may have attention issues if they have difficulty regulating their attention. This is a person's ability to self-monitor and manage their attention.

🔍Attention is not just about what we focus on, but also about what we can filter out. When someone has an attention challenge, they may have difficulty filtering out distractions, maintaining focus and staying on-task, especially ones that require sustained mental effort.

🧐 Some people with attention regulation issues may focus intensely or 'hyperfocus' things that interest them. They may become so engaged that they lose track of what's happening around them and even their body cues like hunger and thirst!

📊 Attention issues in children are becoming increasingly prevalent - a study done in 2017 by the National Center for Learning Disabilities in the US indicated that 1 in 5 children had learning and attention issues. While difficulty paying attention is widely associated with ADHD, it can also be a result of anxiety, OCD, stress, trauma, learning disabilities and sensory sensitivities. In recent years, multiple studies have also linked screen exposure from a young age to attention difficulties.

🗓️ Stay tuned for our next episode of Tuesdays for Teachers where we look at strategies to support students with attention challenges!
