Following India’s emotional and long-awaited victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20 Internationals. The decision was widely perceived as a strategic move to extend their ODI and Test careers.
However, a few months later, both stalwarts shocked fans again—this time by stepping away from Test cricket, and that too within just five days of each other.
All Eyes on 2027 World Cup
With T20Is and Tests behind them, it became increasingly evident that both veterans were now focusing entirely on the 2027 ODI World Cup. But the path to that global event appears to be anything but easy.
India’s current ODI team is in a transitional phase, with youngsters getting more opportunities. That means even players like Kohli and Rohit, once automatic selections, now face increasing competition and uncertainty over their spots.
The Incomplete Dream of 2023
The 2023 World Cup was a major emotional milestone for both players. Kohli was chasing a second World Cup title, while Rohit was dreaming of lifting the trophy for the first time as captain. Despite an undefeated run leading into the final, India suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Australia.
It left both players—and millions of Indian fans—with unfulfilled dreams.
Fitness & Focus: The New Mantra
With age no longer on their side, both players are reported to be focusing heavily on fitness and long-term planning.
Rohit Sharma, now 38, has reportedly intensified his fitness regime to ensure he remains in peak form till 2027. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli recently stated at an RCB event ahead of IPL 2025 that “his next big goal is to win the World Cup.”
Their dedication remains unquestioned, but challenges loom large.
BCCI’s Balanced Approach
A senior BCCI official acknowledged the situation, saying, “Yes, this topic will come up soon. The 2027 World Cup is still more than two years away. But by then, both Kohli and Rohit will be around 40. We need a clear roadmap moving forward. New players also deserve opportunities.”
The BCCI is clear that it won’t impose any decisions on Kohli or Rohit. However, a professional and honest conversation is expected to take place in the near future.
“Look, they’ve given everything to Indian cricket. They’ve achieved almost everything. So, no decisions will be made against their will. But their physical and mental readiness will be key factors,” the official added.
The Challenge of Limited ODIs
India is scheduled to play only 27 ODIs until the end of 2026. Most of these will be scattered between Test and T20 series, making it difficult for players—especially those focusing only on ODIs—to maintain rhythm and form.
This presents yet another hurdle for Kohli and Rohit, who now only feature in the 50-over format.
