Berlin is the capital and a state of the Federal Republic of Germany. With about 3.7 million inhabitants, the city is the most populous and, with 892 square kilometers, the largest municipality in Germany, as well as the most populous city in the European Union. Since 1999, the city has been the seat of the Federal Government, the Federal President, the German Bundestag, the Bundesrat, as well as most federal ministries, numerous federal agencies and embassies.
