Afro-Peruvian Teachers in Cusco, Peru (June, 2011). Elean Alarcon dancer and Ernesto Carillo (cajon player). This 2-week cultural/music tour was based in the ancient Incan capital of Cusco and included hands-on learning of traditional and folklore-popular Andean music with a secondary focus on Afro-Peruvian and criollo music, all with local professional musicians and experts. The tour also included special presentations: indigenous ritual music by guests from the Quechua community of Q'eros, bandurria and orquestín styles, and Wiñay Taki, a family of musicians dedicated to reviving the performance of ancient musical traditions and instruments. We spent time in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visited spectacular Incan ruin sites, including the mystical citadel of Machu Picchu. The tour culminated with the 3-day dance Pentecost dance and music festival in the community of Ollantaytambo (built on ancient, Incan architecture), where over a dozen troupes worshiped the town's patron saint, the Señor de Choqekillka, through colorfully costumed dance and song.
