Many people would have heard the explanation that nobody can hear you scream in space. Like others before you, you may have just taken this as true without giving it much thought. Some may have gone even further and found out that space is quiet because sound can't travel through a vacuum. Both of these things are true, but have you ever wondered why?

Sound is a mechanical wave of energy that moves in a straight line. Sound waves are essentially pressure changes that move through the medium they are in.
As we all know, there is sound on planets and moons in the solar system, where there is something that sound waves can travel through, like an atmosphere or an ocean.
But because space is a vacuum, sound can't go through it. You couldn't hear a guitar being played in space. When you play the guitar strings, they will start to vibrate. This first vibration sets off a chain reaction in the particles around it. This is similar to how a pebble dropped into a pond makes ripples in the water. Each particle that is affected by the vibrations then sends them to the particles around it, passing the energy along. The vibration gets weaker as the sound wave moves farther away. This keeps happening until the sound wave stops being there because a small amount of energy is lost each time particles move. So, we need particles in order for sound to move. These particles can make up water, gas, liquids, or even solids.
Between the huge gaps of nothingness between cosmic bodies in space, there are no particles that can vibrate. This means that the first vibrations of the guitar string would have nowhere to go and no one would ever hear it.
Even though space is quieter than you could ever imagine, it doesn't have no sounds at all. No, you can't hear sounds in places in space that are almost empty. Sound moves through a medium like air or water by making the atoms and molecules in that medium move back and forth. Since there is no air in space, sounds can't move there.
Space is too big for sound waves to travel through, but there are some small places where sound can exist, but only in very specific ways.
