The village of Ysternia in Tinos: "A work of art sculpted in marble..."
Ysternia is one of the largest villages of Tinos and is located in the western part of the island (Exo Meria).

The settlement dates back to 1600 and reached its peak at the beginning of the 20th century.

The name Ysternia (and no longer Isternia) probably came from its location, since in the past it was the last village where the carriage road ended. According to another version, it is due to the large number of cisterns in the village.

They were one of the most important centers of marble work and produced notable sculptors such as A. Sohos , L. Sohos , L. Lameras , I. and Fr. Malakate and the Phytali brothers .

Your walk in the village and the visit to the Museum of Ysterniot Artists will convince you of the great tradition of the inhabitants of the village in the art of marble. The Glyni marble square (1927), the old primary school (1931), the churches of Agia Paraskevi (1892), Agia Triada (1816) and Agia Anna are representative examples.

North of the village, in the location of Myloni, you will find a cluster of exceptional windmills from the 19th century, which have been classified as preserved monuments, as well as the church of Agios Athanasios, one of the oldest on the island.

In the wider area of Ysternia, there is the Katapoliani Monastery and the temple of the Second Finding (this is where the holy icon of the Evangelist of Tinos was found after it was stolen).

Your tour of Ysternia should also include Ormos Ysternia , which is reached by a road that starts from the village.

Access
Ysternia is 18 km from Chora. You reach Ysternia via the new Chora-Panormou road network (either starting from Kionia beach or Tripotamos Avenue).
