At a viewer's request, Phillip Sear plays a piece from around 1882 by the German composer Carl Gänschals (1847–1906).

Gänschals specialized in composing melodic but technically undemanding salon pieces, which were very popular in his lifetime. Indeed, he is still remembered in his home town of Stolberg (in North Rhine-Westphalia), as you can see here: http://bit.ly/1QBkPsO . The house where he was born is now a hotel, and serves (what look like) white chocolate cookies with his name and picture on them! Gänschals used several pseudonyms, which seem to be publisher-related, and ran sets of opus numbers for each. One of them, 'Theodor Espen' was exclusively published by Ernst Eulenberg, and ran to 65 opus numbers - however, Gänschals published well over 400 works under his own name with a different publisher!

I believe that this piece started life as a piano work, but there is a song version from 1889 with the words "Schweigend in dunklem Schatten" (Silent in dark shadows), and the piece was published in Australia under the title 'Ninon'. The Polish edition from which I played shows what looks like apple blossom on the cover, hence my thumbnail.
