In today's post, we are going to learn about the history of the temple of Samayapuram Mariamman.

Samayapuram is the foremost shrine in Tamil Nadu for Mariamman worship. Even if it is said that this temple is the head base of all Mariamman temples in Tamil Nadu or in the world, it does not exaggerate its glory. The Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is located about 15 kilometers north of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu from the north bank of the Cauvery.

Samayapuram is also given special names like Kannanur, Kannapuram, Vikramapuram and Makalipuram. The goddess got the name 'Samayapurathal' because she would come and protect her at the right time when Abhaya calls ouis

Samayapuram Mariamman's Moola Vigraha has a unique iconography compared to other temples. The idol of the Lord is made of wood and herbs, and carvings are done on it.
Samayapuratal resides here in Tirumeni Pratishtha, subduing the dominions of the 27 stars, as 27 Yantras. Since the original idol of Samayapuratal is made of herbs, the Ambika here does not have abhishekam. Abhishekam is performed only for Goddess Utsavar.

It is believed to be a place where a Chola king built a city and a fort for his younger sister. Later, the fort was destroyed by the invasion of the Pandyan kings and turned into a Neem forest. Thala Purana says that the Goddess had a temple here later.

The statue of Mariamman named Vaishnavi was in Srirangam Aranganathar temple. Unable to bear its ferocity, Jeer Swami, who was there, ordered the removal of the statue from there. According to his orders, those who came to dispose of the idol of Vainavi went north and rested at the present (Inam) Samayapuram a little distance away.

Then they took the idol and came to the south-west and placed it on the Kannanur palace mound where the present Mariamman temple is located and rested. Later when he tried to lift the idol again he could not lift the palanquin. Then Mariamman told her through Asariri that she wanted to build a temple here, leaving the idol there. Later, passers-by passing through the forest were amazed to see the image and gathered the neighboring villagers and started worshiping them. From that day Vaishnavite was called as "Kannanur Mariamman".


இன்றைய பதிவில் சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மனின் ஆலய வரலாற்றை குறித்து நாம் அறிந்துகொள்ளவிருக்கிறோம்.

மாரியம்மன் வழிபாட்டில் தமிழகத்தில் முதன்மை பெற்ற திருத்தலமாக சமயபுரம் விளங்குகிறது. இக்கோவிலை தமிழகத்தின் இல்லை இல்லை உலகில் உள்ள அனைத்து மாரியம்மன் கோவில்களின் தலைமை பீடம் என்று கூறினாலும் அது இதன் பெருமைக்கு மிகையாகாது. சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மன் கோயில் தமிழகத்தின் திருச்சிராப்பள்ளிக்கு வடக்கே காவிரியின் வட கரையிலிருந்து சுமார் 15 கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

சமயபுரத்திற்கு கண்ணனூர் , கண்ணபுரம், விக்கிரமபுரம், மாகாளிபுரம் என்ற சிறப்பு திருப்பெயர்களும் வழங்கப்பெறுகின்றன. அபய குரல் கொடுத்தால் தக்க சமயத்திலே ஓடோடி வந்து காப்பவள் என்பதால், ‘சமயபுரத்தாள்’ என்ற காரண பெயர் அம்மனுக்கு ஏற்பட்டது.

சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மனின் மூல விக்ரகம் மற்றக் கோயில்களை விட தனிதன்மை வாய்ந்த சிலாரூபமாக இருக்கிறது. மூலவரின் திருவுருவம் மரத்தாலும் மூலிகைகளாலும் செய்யப்பட்டு அதன்மேல் சுதை வேலைப்பாடுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.
27 நட்சத்திரங்களின் ஆதிக்கங்களை தன்னுள் அடக்கி, 27 யந்திரங்களாக திருமேனி பிரதிஷ்டையில் சமயபுரத்தாள் இங்கே வீற்றிருக்கிறாள். சமயபுரத்தாள் மூல விக்கிரகம் மூலிகைகளால் ஆனதால், இங்கிருக்கும் அம்பிகைக்கு அபிஷேகம் கிடையாது. உற்சவர் அம்மனுக்கு மட்டுமே அபிஷேகம் செய்விக்கப்படுகிறது.

சோழ மன்னர் ஒருவர் தன் தங்கைக்கு சீதனமாக ஒரு நகரையும் கோட்டையையும் உண்டாக்கிக் கொடுத்த இடமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. பிற்காலத்தில், பாண்டிய மன்னர்களின் படையெடுப்பால் கோட்டை அழிந்து வேம்புக்காடாக மாறியது. பின்னாளில் அம்மன் இங்கே கோயில் கொண்டருளியதாக தல புராணம் கூறுகிறது.

வைஸ்ணவி என்ற மாரியம்மன் சிலை ஸ்ரீரங்கம் அரங்கநாதர் ஆலயத்தில் இருந்தது. அதன் உக்கிரம் தாங்க முடியாமல் போனதால், அங்கிருந்த ஜீயர் சுவாமிகள், அச்சிலையை அங்கிருந்து அப்புறப்படுத்த ஆணையிட்டார். அவருடைய ஆணைப்படி வைணவியின் சிலையை அப்புறப்படுத்த வந்தவர்கள் வடக்கு நோக்கிச் சென்று சற்று தூரத்தில் தற்போதுள்ள (இனாம்) சமயபுரம் என்னுமிடத்தில் இளைப்பாறினார்கள்.

பிறகு விக்ரகத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு தென்மேற்காக வந்து தற்போதுள்ள மாரியம்மன் கோயில் அமைந்துள்ள கண்ணனூர் அரண்மனை மேட்டில் வைத்துவிட்டு ஓய்வெடுத்தனர். பின்னர் மீண்டும் சிலையை தூக்க முயற்சித்த போது பல்லக்கை தூக்க முடியவில்லை. அப்பொழுது அசரீரி வாயிலாக தான் இங்கேயே கோவில் கொள்ளவிரும்புவதாக மாரியம்மன் தெரிவிக்கவே சிலையை அங்கேயே விட்டுவிட்டு சென்றனர். பின்னர், காட்டு வழியாகச் சென்ற வழிப்போக்கர்கள், அச்சிலையைப் பார்த்து அதிசயப்பட்டு அக்கம்பக்கத்தில் இருந்த கிராம மக்களைக் கூட்டிவந்து வழிபட துவங்கினர். அன்று முதல் வைஷ்ணவி ”கண்ணனூர் மாரியம்மன்” என்ற பெயரில் அழைக்கப்படுகிறாள்.
