The saying that cockroaches would survive a nuclear war comes from their remarkable toughness, especially against radiation. Cockroaches are cold-blooded insects with a slow cell-division cycle compared to humans. Radiation is most dangerous when cells are dividing, so this slower pace means their bodies suffer less immediate damage.

They can also withstand higher doses of radiation than people—some studies show they can take several times more without dying. Their simple bodies and hardy exoskeletons help protect them, and they can go without food for weeks, even surviving in poor conditions that would kill most animals.

However, they are not truly “nuclear-proof.” Extremely high radiation levels can still kill them, and they would also face the same post-war challenges as other creatures—like lack of food, extreme temperatures, and toxic environments. The idea is more about them lasting longer than humans in the early aftermath, rather than thriving forever.

So, while cockroaches might crawl around long after the first blasts, they wouldn’t be alone—some other tough insects and microscopic life could survive too. The difference is, cockroaches have the unlucky fame of being the last bugs standing.
