Counting the number of different shapes used in a tessellation can tell you a lot about how complex the underlying tiling is.
If there's only 2 shapes you have an alternating pattern, with 3-5 shapes you have a moderate structure, and with 6 or more shapes (like this pattern) that's a very complex structure indeed!
