In 1933, The New School’s leadership reacted to Hitler’s grab for power by rescuing 11 social scientists, Frieda Wunderlich among them, and founding what we know today as the University in Exile. Along with Wunderlich, two other women—Hannah Arendt and Arien Mack—also played a key role in founding and continuing the success of the University in Exile.

In partnership with the Women’s Legacy Project, we’re sharing the stories of numerous little-known but leading women, each of whom helped craft The New School’s rich history.

Interviews with Gina Walker at her home in Rhinebeck, NY, were shot and edited by Will Lucas and Anomie Williams. Interviews with Arien Mack were shot and edited by Will Lucas and Anomie Williams. All of these interviews were directed by Cecilia Rubino.
