Welcome to our first ever episode of The Good Robot Hot Takes! Every two weeks Kerry and I will be giving our hot take on some of the biggest issues in tech. In our first ever Good Robot Hot Take, we discuss the Future of Life Institute’s Open Letter, which called for a six month ‘pause’ in developing large language models in the wake of the release of ChatGPT.

We discuss why we shouldn’t call large language models foundational or say that they’re inevitable, what the dangers are of ‘AI race’ rhetoric, why the long-term harms of AI are given more attention than its immediate, short term risks, and how race and gender shape what is known was existential risk.
