Wednesday’s third and final discussion was a fireside chat with Stacey Cunningham, the president of the New York Stock Exchange. This chat was moderated by Robert Steers (B ‘75), the CEO of Cohen and Steers and the chairman of the board of advisors at the McDonough School of Business.

The chat kicked off with a conversation about the role of equity markets within the issue of widening wealth inequality as both a contributing factor and a possible source of shared success. Next, Cunningham spoke to how COVID-19 has largely bucked recent trends between public listings and private capital raisings. Particularly, 2020 has been the busiest IPO year on record. Further, Cunningham discussed the increased variety of routes that companies pursuing to gain access to public funding through paths including direct listings as well as SPACs and how the NYSE is adjusting to these increasingly popular esoteric pathways. Lastly, Cunningham weighed in on the market impact of increased retail investing through platforms like RobinHood. Cunningham emphasized the need to protect retail investors and spoke to the effect of the fragmentation of trading on stock market volatility.
