Listen to the cute chirps of Sociable weaver chicks at their nest in the Kalahari desert.

As the sun rises over the huge expanse of the Kalahari, the Sociable weavers that live in this solitary tree head out to find food for their chicks. It's tough living in the desert on your own, let alone with a gaggle of noisy and hungry chicks. Even so, the weavers manage to raise their chicks and to thrive in this harsh but beautiful setting.

The chicks don't know much about what it means to survive here except for being the loudest one asking for food. Their world does not extend beyond the confines of their massive nest community. They live happily a day at a time, with the sunrise and sunset marking the passage of time until they are ready to fledge.

When I found this massive nest in the Kalahari I instantly knew I had to record it. The adult birds didn't seem too bothered by me so I slowly got close and set up a small recording rig at the bottom of the tree. Once it was safely in place I retreated and left it out until the next day. Checking out the sound recordings back at the lodge was a beautiful experience. It's difficult to get a more intimate glimpse into the life of these fascinating birds.
