From 2013/14, the Combined Homelessness and Information Network recorded a total of 6,508 people sleeping rough or engaging in other street activities causing concern or requiring a welfare response, such as begging, drinking or using drugs.

The SW Londoner spoke to two homeless people outside East Croydon station on a Thursday morning, as commuters rushed past.

At the same time, queues gathered outside the Home Office, just around the corner on Wellesley Road.
