Bullwhip Cracking: Choosing the Length of your Whip

This video is directed at beginning whip crackers who want to know what whip length they should choose. It's generally noted that a good beginning whip length is a 6 to 8 foot bullwhip or a 5 to 7 foot stock whip (as long as you have the space to swing a whip that long).

My basic rule in this video is that whatever whip you choose, you should be able to swing it around, fully extended, without letting it hit the ground, and without getting tired too quickly.

Good whip cracking comes from confident and relaxed whip swinging. If you can't swing the whip easily and in a relaxed manner, cracking the whip is going to be a struggle.

A good whip should cut through the air easily. If you swing your whip around and have the feeling that it's dragging, or you have to put in a lot of effort, then it's likely that the whip has a poor taper or balance.

If you feel your arm tire quickly, then the whip is too heavy for you. If you can't keep the whip off the ground at all, then it's too long for learning multiple cracking.

If you pick up the whip and it's too hot or too cold, too hard or too soft, then you are Goldilocks. (Yes, that was a joke ;-)

Unfortunately you can only try swinging a whip once you have it. That's part of the problem of buying a whip through a catalog or through the Internet. I hope that by swinging your whip around you can find out for yourself if this whip has the potential to work well for you.
