Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler has said the horror attack on his girlfriend was a result of a 'manic episode' after he was arrested for allegedly strangling her until she passed out and saying 'wow, you're alive' when she regained consciousness.

Wheeler, 27, was released from jail in the Seattle suburb of Kent on Tuesday on $400,000 bail following his arrest three days earlier on suspicion of felony assault-domestic violence.

He issued a statement on Wednesday blaming the assault, which was sparked when he allegedly told his girlfriend to bow to him but she refused, on a 'manic episode'.
