Theyyam, the colourful ritual art form, is an integral part of the life of people in Malabar, the region comprising the northern districts of Kerala. The performance is a continuing tradition at numerous shrines and ancestral homes in the region.
Theechamundi theyyam- A Theyyam which enters fire multiple times (101 times)
Thee Chamundi Theyyam performance is based on the mythological story of Hiranyakashipu, Narasimha and Prahlada.
Hiranyakashipu (the king of Asuras), is a demon in Hindu myths. His younger brother, Hiranyaksha was killed by Vishnu, during his Varaha incarnation. Enraged at this, he decided to kill Vishnu by acquiring magical powers from Brahma by performing a penance for him. At last he succeeded in securing a boon from Brahma that he would not die on earth or in space, or in fire or water, not during the day or night, not inside or outside and not by the hand of a human, god, animal or any other animate or inanimate species.
After acquiring the boon, Hiranyakashipu has become a trouble for all. Narashimha, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu with a lion head kills Hirayakashipu.
The body of the dancer is decorated with tender coconut leaves. With vigorous chanting, at the climax of the dance, the performer jumps on top of a huge bonfire. It is believed that because of the arduous spiritual observances the dancer has undergone he becomes resistant to burns.
Hiranyakashipu is the uncle of Prahlada (son of Hiranyaksha), who is an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. The asura king, whose wish is to kill Lord Vishnu tries a number of times to burn Prahlada alive. Finally the Narashimha, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu with a lion head kills Hirayakashipu.

ഇഹലോകത്തിനു ഭാരമാം ഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിനെ വധിക്കാന്‍ വിശ്വംഭരനാം വിഷ്ണുഭഗവാന്‍ നരസിംഹരൂപം ധരിച്ചു. തൃസന്ധ്യക്ക് ഉമ്മറപ്പടിയില്‍ വച്ച് ഹിരണ്യകശിപുതന്‍ കുടല്‍ പിളര്‍ന്ന്‍ രുധിരപാനം ചെയ്തു സംഹാരമൂര്‍ത്തിയാം ശ്രീനാരായണന്‍ ആ മഹത് വേളയില്‍ ഈരേഴു – പതിന്നാലുലോകങ്ങളും പരമാനന്ദം പൂണ്ടു , ദേവദുന്ദുഭികള്‍ മുഴങ്ങി, ദേവഗണങ്ങള്‍ ദേവാദിദേവനെ വാഴ്ത്തി, കൊട്ടും കുഴല്‍ വിളി നാദത്തോടെ അപ്സരകന്യമാര്‍ നൃത്തമാടി, നാരദവസിഷ്ടാദി താപസന്മാര്‍ നാരായണനാമം ജപിച്ചു, മാലോകര്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ ഭഗവാനെ സ്തുതിച്ചു . ഭൂമിയും ആകാശവും പാതാളവും വിഷ്ണുമായയില്‍ ആനന്ദലഹരിയിലായി…… എന്നാല്‍ അഗ്നിദേവനുമാത്രം ഇതത്ര സഹിച്ചില്ല, ആഘോഷങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിട്ടുനിന്ന അദ്ദ്യേഹം ഹിരണ്യവധം ഒരു നിസാരകാര്യമാണെന്നും , ആര്‍ക്കും ചെയ്യാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നതാണെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ വിമര്‍ശിച്ചു. ഇതില്‍ കുപിതനായ വിഷ്ണുഭഗവാന്‍ പാവകന്‍റെ അഹംഭാവം മാറ്റാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച് , മാനംമുട്ടെ ഉയരത്തില്‍ ആളിക്കത്തുന്ന ഹോമകുണ്ഡത്തിലേക്ക് എടുത്തുചാടി, അഹങ്കാരിയാം അഗ്നിയെ കണക്കില്ലാതെ മര്‍ദിച്ചു .. ഒടുവില്‍ കത്തിജ്ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന അഗ്നികുണ്ഡത്തെ വെറും ചാരമാക്കിമാറ്റി ലോകധിനാധനാം ജഗന്നാഥന്‍ . ഭഗവാന്‍റെ ഈ സ്വരൂപമാണ് ഒറ്റക്കോലമായി കെട്ടിആരാധിക്കുന്നത്……
Sree Muthappan is a Malabar Thiyya deity commonly worshiped in the North Malabar region of Kerala and Coorg region of Karnataka, India.
Worship of Muthappan is unique in that it does not follow the Satvic Brahminical form of worship, as in other Hindu temples of Kerala. Worshipping system is according to Shakteyam where Panja-ma-kara are offered including Madhyam ( Toddy) and Mamsam (flesh) The main mode of worship is via a ritual enactment of Muthappan, performed daily at the Parassinikadavu temple. Fish and toddy is used as an offering to Muthappan, and people of all castes, religions and nationalities are permitted to enter the temple and take part in the worship.
