Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was an American polymath and one of the principal architects of the United States. Born in Boston as the fifteenth of seventeen children, he was apprenticed to his brother as a printer before running away to Philadelphia. Through relentless self-education and industry, Franklin became a successful printer, publisher, and scientist. His famous experiments with electricity led to the invention of the lightning rod. He played a crucial role in drafting the Declaration of Independence and securing French support during the American Revolution. Later in life, he was a revered statesman and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. His autobiography remains a classic text on self-discipline and the pursuit of virtue.
